Some more experiments here, high speed splash photography which I shot in the sink. Exterrnal flash used, an SB-600 Speedlight in commander mode, which was bounced off the wall behind the falling drops. Sigma 150 macro used on the D90....

Image here of some galls I noticed on a Willow tree. These stuctures are made by various insect, perhaps a Wasp or Weevil species. The larvae live inside these structures parasitically living off the plant in some cases. Eventually the adult insect is formed inside and bores a hole in the structure to escape it...

Whilst working with the willow tree blossoms themselves I started to notice that they in turn had attracted the attention of a fairly large species of Ant. The ants were busy collecting the nectar and presumably pollenating the willows themselves in return. My first insect images these, a thoroughly enjoy able exercise. Particularily happy with the top image in this post...

Spring Shoot.

A few shot here with the Sigma 150mm Macro, the first taken with the lens. Have a long way to go with this lens, first impressions are good, really sharp images. The narrow depth of field makes for very interesting shots, pin sharp focal point with nice soft backgrounds. More to follow over the summer.

Splash Photography; 29th April 2010

Posted here are my first attempts at both macro photography and splash photography. The images were taken with a Sigma 150mm Macro lens, with the aid if an external flash in commander mode. I basically filled the kitchen sink with water and used a dripping tap to disturb the water. By bouncing the flash off various coloured sheets and towels I was able to shoot in yello, blue, red and white, adding interest to the shots. Shot at f16 at 1/200 second. Looking forward to getting into macro images, this is just the begining, a very enjoyable days photography from which I learned a lot...

Meltwater. The falls at Nyfors had burst their banks due to the huge thaw, the torrent rushing past bankside trees. Wonderful light today...

A few images taken in Ireland last week whilst on a break back home to visit family. All taken with Nikon D90 and Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens. Finding myself getting more attached to this superb little lens, it is really helping me understand photography rapidly on many different levels, I would thouroughly recomend it to anyone...

My first attempt at portraiture today with the camera, the learning curve goes on. All these shots were taken on a Nikon D90 with Nikkor 50mm 1.8 Lens. The shots were taken using a remote trigger, the camera mounted on a tripod. An interesting exercise, some of the results were a little soft, due maimly to lighting, though focus an issue, may try manual focus next time out. I have no studio, the lighting was provided by a small lamp, used a dark blanket as a backdrop. Happy enough with the results all the same, not bad for a first attempt without proffesional studio equipment....

Old Town Street

A couple of hours strolloing around the Old Town here in Stockholm this afternoon proved fruitful, despite rather poor light. The whole place is bursting with interest and all manner of scenes capture the eye as you wander around the place. Despite the poor light in the winter, there is an advantage in less people in the area, this is a tourist mecca during the summer months, when an early morning start would be needed to find the winding alleyways empty. Best of the images taken today posted here...

Buoys. Hanging under the eaves of a fishing shed with other bits and pieces...

Driftwood. Found in an old yard...

Peg and Knot. These are used as aids to provide tension whilst net making....

Lifering.

Gable end of an old fishing shed, immaculatly kept and maintained over the years...

Tile roof and Lichens. Clean air perfect on the island for lichens and they abound, these growing on a tiled roof over a fishing shed....

A trip to Landsort, an island in the southern Stockholm Archipelago today with the camera on a birdwatching trip saw me take these images around the main fishing village at Norrhamn. A very old fishing village still operates to a somewhat diminished capacity, wandered about taking shots of whatever caught my eye, though light rather dull today on a typical late autumn day in Sweden. The waters around the island still excellent for deep water Salmon and Seatrout, though the old days of Herring fleets have gone, just a few smaller boats now operate from the harbour on a subsitent scale....
